ESTERO — A Collier County man is in critical condition after his dump truck was run off the road by a BMW Friday afternoon on Interstate 75.
Around 1:15 p.m., a BMW X3 SUV tried to cross over into the outside southbound lane near mile marker 118, but the lane was already occupied by a Ford LTL9000 dump truck, according to a crash report. In order to avoid the BMW, the dump truck’s driver, Manuel Adrain Amador-Sabio, 23, went off onto the shoulder but lost control when he tried to reenter the roadway, troopers said.
The BMW then sideswiped the dump truck, causing the dump truck to overturn on its right side, spilling a load of gravel and rocks onto the road.
The wreck closed southbound lanes of the interstate for about two hours.
Amador-Sabio was flown to Lee Memorial Hospital in critical condition. Neither the BMW’s driver, Kenneth G. Ross, 56, of Ontario, Canada, nor his three passengers were injured.
Alcohol was not thought to be a factor in the crash, according to reports. Ross was cited for an improper lane change.
