MIAMI — A former Central American general is facing a deportation hearing because of atrocities he committed during El Salvador's civil war.
The case of Jose Guillermo Garcia will continue Monday at immigration court in Miami.
The U.S. government is seeking his deportation to El Salvador for human rights violations. A Stanford University political scientist who testified as a government expert in December will be cross examined during Monday's proceeding.
The Center for Justice and Accountability sued Garcia and a former defense minister on behalf of three torture victims for human rights abuses. In 2002 a West Palm Beach jury returned a $54.6 million judgment against them both.
El Salvador's civil war between 1979 and 1992 left 75,000 people dead and thousands more missing.
