Editorial: Positive Momentum

Positive Momentum is building for Collier County’s Project Prom Dress 2013.

Donations of new and used fancy dresses — as well as tuxedoes, shoes and accessories — are picking up and helpers are lining up.

Volunteer organizer Inez Edmonson says teachers Donna Huprich and Joann Cassio at Lorenzo Walker High School are joining forces and sharing 200 dresses from a previous project to help promgoers afford the special occasion.

In return, Edmonson and her crew of helpers is working with the teachers to promote a fashion show to be held 7 p.m. March 1 at the school. Admission is $10 for the fund-raiser to help defray graduation costs. There will be dresses from Project Prom Dress 2013 modeled at the show.

“Anyone looking for ideas for their prom should plan to attend,’’ Edmonson says, “and there will be door prizes.’’

Meanwhile, volunteers are preparing donated River Reach Plaza storefront space on Airport-Pulling Road for dress giveaway days March 23 and April 13.

Jeff Marsh, engineer at the Naples Hilton is designing dressing rooms, Goodwill Industries has loaned dress racks and shelving, and Lee Brownfield of The Print Shop at 13800 U.S. 41 N. has provided posters to display around town.

Kay’s on the Beach of Marco Island has made the largest clothing donation so far — 50 dresses.

Items can be dropped through March 20 at:

n Naples Daily News, 1100 Immokalee Road

n Marco Island Eagle, 579 Elkcam Circle

n Platinum Total Fabricare cleaners at Park Shore Center, 3633 U.S. 41 N., Naples, and 2741 Bay Landing Drive, Bay Landing Shops, Bonita Springs.

Thanks to everyone who is helping make this community event a success.
