A better idea
Perhaps a better use for the Grand Central Station property would be to erect a two-story for-fee parking garage and have multi-use buildings for the remaining ground.
Fifth Avenue South could become a beautiful, tree-lined pedestrian street from Ninth Street to Third Street with one lane dedicated for a shuttle bus from the parking lot and making various stops along Fifth Avenue.
Imagine palm trees and benches accommodating visitors and residents on a traffic-free Fifth Avenue.
Local businesses would benefit financially from increased tourism and the community would benefit from increased tourist tax revenues, plus our downtown Fifth Avenue environment would be pollutant-free.
A model for this pedestrian, traffic-free zone can be seen on the Pearl Street Mall in Boulder, Colo.
