Crash involving FHP trooper investigated as traffic homicide

A Lee County crash involving a Florida Highway Patrol trooper is being investigated as a traffic homicide because a woman’s unborn child was killed in the crash Feb. 15.

Crystal McClure was 22 weeks pregnant when Trooper Gustavo Reyes, 47, crashed into her car around 9:15 p.m., according to a crash report released Wednesday. The baby, who was to be named Christian, was pronounced dead by doctors at Lee Memorial Hospital the next afternoon.

McClure, 28, of North Fort Myers, was riding in a Jeep Grand Cherokee with her husband, Christopher, when their car was struck from behind by Reyes’ patrol car near mile marker 134 of Interstate 75. The Jeep overturned, and both McClures were ejected.

Initial reports said Crystal McClure was in critical condition, while her husband had minor injuries. A 1-year-old child in the back seat, also Christopher McClure, was uninjured.

The elder Christopher McClure told troopers they were wearing their seat belts but said the seat belts were known to malfunction from time to time by not latching in properly.

A traffic homicide investigation by FHP is ongoing. Reports did not say why Reyes crashed into the Jeep and the word "unknown" was written in a column asking about possible distractions.
