An East Naples man is accused of punching another driver early on New Year's Day in an apparent case of road rage.

Around 2:20 a.m., a witness told Collier County sheriff's deputies he saw two men approach the driver of a black Jeep and punch him while he remained in the vehicle.

The victim told deputies he was having car trouble at the intersection of Commercial Drive and Davis Boulevard when two men in a silver car began to honk and yell at him. The victim was able to fix the problem and pulled into a Hess gas station at Davis and Airport-Pulling Road, an arrest report said.

The two men followed the Jeep's driver into the parking lot, at which point one of them held him down while the other punched him, according to the report. The victim later identified Javier Mesta, 30, as the man who punched him, deputies said.

Mesta denied attacking the other driver, but deputies found cuts and blood on his knuckles, according to the report.

Mesta, of the 2300 block of Washington Avenue, faces a misdemeanor charge of battery.
