Marco Senior Softball begins 14th season

The Marco Island Senior Softball League opened its 14th season this week in Island and Marco Divisions.

It is like a rite of passage as so many have played for many, if not all, the years.

Here are the results of the first two days.

Island Division

Sand Bar, 21, Nacho Mama's, 6

In the opening game of the 2013 season in the Island Division, Sand Bar revenged last season's opening game loss to Nacho Mama's.

Scott Byers racked up four hits, John Gross, Jim Blankenship, and Pete Oellrich each had three hits and Jack Evans two for Sand Bar. One of Oellrich's hits was a triple. Rich Krumholz and Gary LaMotte ripped three hits each to pace Nacho Mama's. Steve Hummel had three RBIs for Nacho's, while Wayne Bombaci and Steve Clark drove in two runs apiece for Sand Bar.

Marco Island Brewery, 10, Sasso's, 7

The Brewery rallied from a 5 -1 deficit to win. Ed Brack cracked four singles, Jack Martin, Ray Niemeyer, and Chuck Reich had two hits each, with Reich driving in three runs for the Brewery. Brack and Lou Wolfenson had two RBI. Bill Thompson had three hits, including two doubles and Jimmy Cuevas, two hits for Sasso's.

. Islander Restaurant, 22, DaVinci's, 12

Islander Restaurant pound out 27 hits, opening up a 17-1 lead before DaVinci's was able to rally. Rich Small slammed out five hits, hitting for the cycle (single, double, triple and home run) and driving in six runs. Herman Griffith had four hits; Dave Banghart, Jim Williams, Jerry Cnudde three hits each, with Ron Hobson and Ralph Sieja having two each. Williams, Griffith, and Sieja each had three RBIs and Mike Endelman two RBIs for the Islanders. Craig Cunningham stroked out fours hits, including a grand slam home run for DaVinci's. Bill Shurina, Denny Lello, Tom Purtell, Fran Diotte, and Jim Green each had two hits.

Marco Division

Joey's Pizza, 12, Rookies, 2

Rick Benedetti had a perfect day at the plate for Joey's, going 4-for-4, Don Rooksberry, Art Fletcher and Bob Grant had two hits each. Gary Grant and John Ranieri each had doubles in the win. Jim White lashed out three hits for Rookies, with Larry Tuttle having two, one a double. John Gill accounted for all the Rookies runs.

CJ's on the Bay, 7, ADKOS, 3

Roger Fleming, Fred Kramer and Warren Uhl recorded two hits apiece for CJ's, with one of Uhl's being a triple, giving him two RBI in the game. Dan Meir had a double in the win. Leroy Fishleigh stroked three hits; Chet Dal Bianco, Jim Vitas, and George Kirk chipped in with two hits each for ADKOS.

Crazy Flamingo, 16, Mutual of Omaha Bank, 8

Crazy Flamingo came out flapping the bats, spraying 24 hits. Ray Zielinski, Dom Fiorda, and Al Cenicola ripped four hits each, Doug Patton had three and Dick DeAnna, Buff Morris and Keith Stought two each. Fiorda ended up with six RBI, Zielinski three and Cenicola and Joe Furst two each. George Bennett of the Bank had three hits, and Jerry Lenhoff, Larry Laird, Paul Burnett, Jack Stevenson, Bob Grimm and Ron Burger had two hits each. Lenhoff had a double and home run, good for two RBIs.

Marco Island Brewery, Islander Restaurant and Sand Bar, each 1-0; DaVinci's, Nacho Mama's and Sasso's, each 0-1.

Marco Division Standings

CJ's on the Bay, Crazy Flamingo and Joey's Pizza, each 1-0; ADKOS, Mutual of Omaha Bank and Rookies, each 0-1.
