An East Naples man was arrested Tuesday morning after Collier County sheriff's deputies reported finding him face down on the ground in the woods with an AR-15 rifle next to him.
Around 9 a.m., a neighbor at South Bay Plantation apartments, 1901 Rookery Bay Drive, called the Sheriff's Office after noticing a Toyota Tundra running unattended in the parking lot for over an hour, according to an arrest report.
Deputies began searching a nearby trail and found James Robert Bakley, 20, on the ground about 30 feet into the trail, according to an arrest report. Deputies said Bakley was "very intoxicated."
Bakley told deputies he was at a friend's place and was asked to leave after he had too much to drink. Bakley said "since he was an American Indian, he wanted to sleep in the woods." He told deputies he was carrying the rifle so he could thwart a potential bear attack.
Deputies placed Bakley into protective custody since there was no one at the scene to take care of him. While at the Naples Jail Center, deputies found a small plastic bag containing cocaine inside his pocket.
Bakley, of the 400 block of San Juan Avenue, faces one felony count of cocaine possession.
