The Lely girls soccer team lost to a powerful Naples team on Wednesday night in the semifinals of the Class 3A-District 12 playoffs, but their season had many highlights.
The Lady Trojans finished 10-4 and were 5-3 in regular season district play.
It loses just three seniors, Jenna Lundquist, Nuria Ferreira and Bo Drescher, who coach Tony Smith says will be missed.
Co-captains, Lundquist led on offense and Ferriera on defense.
"The seniors showed by example, they set the tone," Smith said.
In their playoff 5-2 victory over Lehigh on Monday night, Lundquist scored a hat trick, while sophomore Jenny Carter scored twice. Carter used her fancy footwork to slip by defenders to flash to the goal or make a key pass.
She assisted on two of Lundquist's goals as did Lundquist on Carter's goals. Lexie Lundquist assisted on one of her sister's goals.
"Overall it was a good season, the team meshed and played well together," Smith said. "The girls had good attitudes and had fun. The team was not about individuals."
Lundquist put team first when she passed to others for a chance to score against Lehigh,
"I'm looking forward to next season as we have a young team who gained a lot of experience," Smith said
Returners will be Carter, Christy Thorstenson, Lexie Lundquist, Jordin Giles, Jessica Andrade, Lauren Hanscom, Michaela Smith, Catherine Remaks, Beatrice Reza and Dani Marroquin.
It will be another strong district next year, with Smith expecting his Lady Trojans to be in the hunt for a district title.
