COLLIER COUNTY — Less than two weeks after Tyler Perry, the Rev. Al Sharpton and NAACP president Ben Jealous called for answers, cable channel TV One will feature the disappearances of Collier County men Terrance Williams and Felipe Santos in an hour-long special tonight.
The episode of "Find Our Missing" gives a tick-tock of the men's stories that most locals have likely already heard since the two disappeared in late 2003 and early 2004. But the show's producers interviewed several friends and family members of Williams, providing details that may be new to some viewers.
Keiaira Williams, the eldest of Williams' four children, tells producers she had a baby boy in 2011 and named him Terrance.
"I said to myself, when I have my first son, I will name him after my dad," she said.
Williams' mother, Marcia Williams, also reveals she no longer believes her son is alive.
"I'm praying that I find out where my child's remains are," she says at the end of the show. "And I just want to take him home."
Kevin O'Neill, the lead detective on both cases, and former Collier sheriff Don Hunter repeated their suspicions about Steve Calkins, the former deputy who was the last person to have seen both Santos and Williams. Calkins was fired in August of 2004 after giving inconsistent statements and failing parts of a polygraph about his interactions with the men.
"He was very evasive when he answered questions, very obnoxious when he answered questions, and I don't think he cooperated at all," O'Neill said.
Williams' then-roommate, Jason Gonzalez, said he had a bad feeling when he learned about the Calkins connection.
"When I got that information about Felipe, I right away said, 'Oh no, don't tell me this. Are we dealing with a serial killer?'"
Marcia Williams said her requests to speak with Calkins before his firing were denied by detectives.
"I think they feared for me. I said, you don't have to fear for me," she said, "because I'll kick his ass, the way his mother should have."
Calkins stopped talking to investigators at the time of his firing, and officials said there is no evidence that would allow them to pursue a criminal case.
"Find Our Missing" is a show focusing on the disappearances of people of color, which producers say are featured less prominently in the media than white victims. Blacks account for nearly a third of all missing persons cases, although they only make up about 12 percent of the population, according to TV One.
Through interviews and reenactments, the show gives a "hyper-detailed" timeline of disappearances meant to help any potential witnesses recall significant moments that could help solve the cases.
The episode featuring Williams and Santos airs locally at 9 p.m. on Comcast channel 173 and CenturyLink channel 157.
