— A Golden Gate family was displaced Thursday night after a fire started in their kitchen.

A couple at 1900 42nd St. S.W. returned home around 7 p.m. and found black smoke coming from the home, said Golden Gate fire Batallion Chief Andy Krajewski. No one was home at the time of the fire, and the cause remains under investigation.

Firefighters were able to contain the fire in the kitchen but there was smoke damage throughout the house, Krajewski said.

Red Cross workers showed up around 8:30 p.m. to help the family.
