Guest Commentary: Sad commentary

The newspaper recently published an article about President Barack Obama announcing a $500-million package of legislative proposals and executive actions.

Obama signed 23 executive actions aimed at circumventing congressional opposition. It is my concern, and should be of all American people, that our president continues to abuse the executive powers of his office and continues to attack and dismantle our Constitution and the foundations of this country at the taxpayers’ expense!

Officials in all three branches of government swear an oath to uphold the Constitution. What about the check of power by the other two branches?

When reading this article I cannot help but think how God’s word applies. The Founding Fathers established the three branches of our government, deriving separation of powers – Isaiah: “For the Lord is our judge, The Lord is our lawgiver, The Lord is our King; He will save us.”

The fathers also knew it was necessary to separate and check power so a wicked branch could be held accountable by the other two – Jeremiah: “The heart is deceitful above all things and desperately wicked; who can know it?”

Founding Father and educator Noah Webster had this to say: “The moral principles and precepts contained in the scriptures ought to form the basis of all our civil constitutions and laws. All the miseries and evils which men suffer from vice, crime, ambition, injustice, oppression, slavery and war, proceed from their despising or neglecting the precepts contained in the Bible.”

Thank you for your comment.

WASHINGTON (AP) - President Barack Obama is announcing a $500 million package of executive actions and legislative proposals aimed at reducing gun violence a month after a mass shooting in Connecticut killed 20 elementary school children.

The package includes a call on Congress to ban military-style assault weapons and high-capacity magazine and it would close loopholes in the gun sale background check system.

Obama also is signing 23 executive actions - "which require no congressional approval" - including several aimed at improving access to data for background checks. A presidential memorandum will instruct the Centers for Disease Control to research causes and prevention of gun violence

Also.. What does the bible have to do with the United States government? I believe there is a separation of church and state laws.

A great man said the following:

"We establish no religion in this country, we command no worship, we mandate no belief, nor will we ever. Church and state are, and must remain, separate.

All are free to believe or not believe, all are free to practice a faith or not, and those who believe are free, and should be free, to to speak of and act on their belief.

At the same time that our Constitution prohibits state establishment of religion, it protects the free exercise of all religions. And walking this fine line requires government to be strictly neutral."

Ronald Reagan

Tom, Jesus was a man of peace! Do you really think he would approve of Guns and murdering your fellow man? Or do you hate Obama so much, You try to justify that hate by using your religion?

Whats your point? And your quoiting the Bible when it come to guns!

Dumb

Stop with the bible already! It's not the 'bible' of billions of people on this planet! Why don't we just bring back the Crusades? Then - I'll be sitting in front of my house behind my 'Ma Deuce' atop my surplus M1A1 tank waiting for the real bible toting 2nd ammendment 'crazies'! Be true to the history of the 2nd ammendment and bear your single shot musket as a member of a well organized militia! Then, as loaves and fishes, your musket balls will multiply into 30 round magazines.

>>> Immediately upon taking up his office as 5th Prefect of the Roman province of Judaea, Pontius Pilate issued an edict banning weapons possession by residents there.

>>> We can only image if Jesus & the Disciples had been packing assault weapons during the Last Supper whether he would have been taken so easily by the Sanhedrin and then crucified.

>>> If The Passion of Christ has involved a serious shoot out up their on Golgotha, The New Testament might have had a totally different narrative....

Single shot muskets were the best technology at that time.

Now we have better. I don't recall any mention of technology in the second amendment

. The Bible also says Judgment begins in the House of God. "Churches" are generally more like little business entities pandering to the social needs of people instead of teaching God's word and building the Body of Christ. Every time you turn around some personality turned preacher is messing around with a member of the congregation, raking in the cash or otherwise demonstrating original sin instead of displaying the redeeming nature of Christ. It is so easy for a fundamental Christian to get a amen’s for putting down Obama but only when the Church is transformed will any have a right to complain about civil government.
