— An argument between East Naples neighbors over a lawn mower turned quickly from a fistfight, to a broom fight, to a dog fight, to a knife fight Monday afternoon.

Just before 4 p.m., John Ilarraza, 48, was mowing the lawn in front of his apartment home at 2996 Francis Ave. when Harold Saunders, 52, came out of a neighboring apartment yelling about the debris being blown in his door, according to an arrest report.

The two "exchanged words," the report said. This led to Saunders punching Ilarraza, then picking up a broomstick and hitting his neighbor in the face, deputies said. With his upper lip bloodied, Ilarranza hit Saunders then went inside to get his dog, which he planned to sic on his neighbor.

The dog chased Saunders back into his apartment, which ticked him off, reports said. He emerged with a long kitchen knife, deputies said, and lunged toward the animal.

"I'm gonna kill your dog," he told Ilarranza, according to reports.

The two neighbors wrestled over the knife until it was tossed to the side. After a brief period of punching and grabbing each other, the men gave up. Saunders retreated inside and Ilarranza sat outside waiting for deputies, a report said.

Ilarranza told investigators Saunders also cut the fuel line to his lawn mower at some point during their fight. Saunders was taken to the Naples Jail Center after being treated for minor injuries at the hospital.

There was no mention in reports of the dog being hurt.

Saunders faces charges of battery, criminal mischief and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. He remained in jail Monday in lieu of bonds totaling $23,000.
