Gary Chernow, Lely boys lacrosse coach, has said many times that lacrosse may be the hardest game to learn,

“Playing well begins with catching and throwing and scooping up more ground balls than the opposition,” he said. “The team that scoops up the most ground balls usually wins.”

In his four years at Lely the team has improved, but has won few games.

Chernow said developing a youth program would be a major step in seeing Lely become more competitive.

“We need a youth program on this part of town so that they get involved much younger,” he said. “Now, when they come to high school, we are having to teach fundamentals,” he said at the end of last season.

The future is looking up for Chernow with the Optimist Club of Marco Island adding a lacrosse program, aimed at athletes from ages 10 to 14.

This summer Chernow and varsity players Cody McCauley, Cotton Hail and Drew Fordon, are basically introducing and instructing, in what for most is a new sport for Marco .

Eddie Webb, Optimist Club president, said the club saw the need and Larry Gordon is directing the program.

“The Optimist Club saw a need to provide the sport,” he said. “Nationwide lacrosse has 125,000 players in the youth and high school levels. Lacrosse is one of the fastest-growing sports and is now sanctioned as a championship sport in 21 states with many college scholarships given each year from some of the nation’s biggest universities.”

Webb and Chernow both said that the program can be a feeder system for high school teams.

“Programs like this will be a huge help to the Lely team,” Chernow said. Having a program like this can spark an interest for more individuals who have a lacrosse background. I know they are out there.”

The Marco Island Academy High School, just going into its third year as a school, does not have lacrosse.

“Marco is a great place to start a new lacrosse program,” Webb said. “It provides the kids with a new opportunity to try a sport that they may not see until they get older and then be behind the power curve when they start playing.”

In its first call for athletes, 26 signed up.

“Unfortunately we did not get enough for any other age group than 10 to 14,” Webb said, “It meant that eight kids couldn’t play, but we have enough for two teams.”

The Green Eagles and Gold Eagles practice from 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesdays and 9 to 11 a.m. on Saturdays at Mackle Park. The registration fee is $200, which includes equipment. Financial assistance is available.

“As they develop the kids will play games against each other, with the hope that we can plays teams in the Naples Lacrosse League in August,” Webb said.

For more information, or register, call Webb at 239-394-0494, or go to the Optimist website, Optimist Club of Marco Island.
