The cost of Obamacare, locally and nationwide
U.S. House District 19
The White House will now delay implementation of Obamacare’s so-called employer mandate until late in 2014.
To be clear, businesses are now exempt. You are not.
This announcement is what many of us have known for years. Obamacare is impossible to implement, and it will not make health care more affordable for you or your family.
While you have been figuring out how your family will afford Obamacare, the administration has been busy figuring out how to exempt special interests and Democrat cronies from the costs associated with this bill.
The employer mandate was stuffed into the 1,000-page bill and has been nothing but trouble for the president. This mandate forces companies with more than 50 employees to provide health insurance for employees who work more than 30 hours a week.
Businesses all over America have been bracing for the challenge of complying with this mandate, and in the process, Obamacare has made the future for business in America unsure and unstable. In the meantime, good men and women who own businesses in Southwest Florida are doing what they can to keep employing our families, friends and neighbors.
The practical effect of this mandate encourages businesses to stay under 49 employees, while cutting all full-time employees to less than 30 hours a week.
This is forcing many of you to accept part-time work, while losing your employer-covered health insurance.
How can you care for your family when Obamacare is putting your job on the line?
Here’s the way it was supposed to function: a company would have the option of providing health insurance or dumping their employees into a government exchange at a fine of $2,000 per employee. A study estimated that if companies dropped coverage for 35 million Americans, while paying the $2,000 fine, it would cost the government $1.4 trillion.
With this new exception, corporate America will now be able to put their employees in the government exchange without the penalty. Go re-read the aforementioned numbers again and ask yourself if this can possibly work.
Obviously, the president agrees the Affordable Care Act is bad for business. But why single out just the employer mandate when there are other devastating sections of Obamacare, such as the medical device tax?
This tax hits us hard in Southwest Florida. One of our biggest employers, Arthrex, is a manufacturer of world-class medical devices. Not only do they make medical devices, but the company is also directly responsible for bringing in more tourists to Southwest Florida with conventions and large business meetings. This means more people shopping, more packed restaurants and hotels, and of course, more tourist tax dollars
Repealing the medical device tax has bipartisan support in the house because even Democrats are seeing how truly unworkable Obamacare has become.
This recent move shows us something clearer than ever — the Obama Administration is choosing to help corporate America over helping you and your family. This has been a dependable move from Democrats interested only in growing government not your liberty.
We know that Obamacare is not fair to our seniors, our kids, our grandkids and most of all, it’s not fair to you. It’s time to repeal this bill once and for all so we can put forward a system focused on care for every American.
