Anchors aweigh: Learn how to be a safe boater Saturday

Saturday, June 8, is National Marina Day. It’s your chance to learn more about boating and water safety. Here are the activities planned around town:

Discover boating during Freedom Boat Club’s Welcome to the Water initiative from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Bayfront Place Marina, 436 Bayfront Place, Naples, 239-649-5800; Salty Sam’s Marina, 2500 Main St., Fort Myers Beach, 239-463-7333, and Big Hickory Marina, 26107 Hickory Blvd., Bonita Springs, 239-992-0991. Classes in close-quarters powerboat handling and anchoring techniques will be offered for $10 per person. Register at

Naples Harbour, 475 North Road, Naples, is having a barbecue, with entertainment by Konnie & Kirg, Segway rides, boat inspections for members, a bounce house and face painting from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The first 50 children to arrive will receive free hot dogs and mini cupcakes. The barbecue is $12.99 for adults (to sweeten the deal, it’s buy-one-get-one, so it’s actually two for $12.99) and $6.99 for children 12 and younger, and the Segway rides are $10 per ride. Fishermen’s Village will host a nature fest and outdoor recreation expo from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at 1200 West Retta Esplanade, Punta Gorda.
