SW Florida weather: Afternoon storms stick around through weekend

The first day of summer will bring another round of storms across Southwest Florida.

Expect storms to favor areas near Interstate 75 and U.S. 41 this afternoon, much as they did Thursday. Before the storms start popping, however, we'll kick off Friday morning with warm and muggy conditions and sunshine.

All the moisture packed into our atmosphere combined with the afternoon heating will support a scattering of heavy downpours and storms, which will be slow moving and intense at times. Some storms could even linger through this evening, so don't be surprised if lightning keeps lighting up the sky through 10 or 11 p.m.

The weekend weather should end up being a bit more active as even more tropical moisture flows into Southwest Florida, resulting in the afternoon storms becoming more widespread and numerous.
