Cuts to a major grant that provides help to mentally ill adults and children might eventually trickle down to the Collier County-based David Lawrence Center, CEO David Schimmel said.
Any impact likely won’t be immediate, and predicting the fallout can’t be done now, Schimmel said. But 40 percent of the center’s funding comes from the state, which receives federal grants to distribute to local agencies.
“My guess is that there would probably be a lag, but there certainly could be a long-term impact,” Schimmel said. “With the game Congress plays, you wonder if it will even happen though.”
The White House didn’t detail how Florida would be effected by reductions in mental health funding. Nationally, about 37,000 seriously mentally ill and emotionally disturbed children would lose access to mental health services, the White House reports.
