Leave it to a reader looking out for other readers.
Seasonal resident Ernie Maier, of East Naples and Michigan, read my column on gas prices recently and wanted to share a way to save 5 percent on gasoline purchases.
Maier said go to www.penfed.org, which is the Pentagon Federal Credit Union. Make a $5 deposit and fill out an application for a credit card. Online, it’s the green one that reads PenFed Platinum Cash Rewards Visa Card.
Next, link that card to a bank account and elect to receive no paper credit statements (because there’s a fee for that). Maier suggested calling 1-800-247-5626, the number on the site, if you need help with the application.
If you’re approved, the credit union will mail you a card you can use when you fill up at any gasoline pump in the U.S. But you must use the card at the pump, not in the store, Maier noted. Saving $20 a month with the card means you’ll save $240 a year.
Thank you, Ernie.
