— Hundreds of members of the community showed up on this brisk morning to help celebrate Avow’s 30th Anniversary and Annual Butterfly Release at Cambier Park in Naples, Saturday March 2, 2013.

The morning kicked off with a variety of butterfly activities such as face painting, coloring books and last but not least, decorating your very own set of butterfly wings.

Musical entertainment was performed by the popular Johnny T. “the man of many voices”. Known throughout the country as the voice of all voices, Johnny performs songs from artists such as Frankie Valli, Frank Sinatra, Bobby Darin, Paul Anka and many others.

A “Wings to Go” store displayed duffel bags, tote bags, jewelry, scarves and just about anything else you can imagine, all decorated with butterflies in one form or another.

One of the highlights of the day was being able to roam freely through the beautifully decorated butterfly tent. The crowd lined up outside waiting their turn to view over 600 magnificent live butterflies scheduled to be released following the remembrance ceremony. Many people experiencing this for the first time were thrilled when the moment arrived and a butterfly actually landed on their clothing, hats or bodies as they carefully walked through the tent.

At noon, a community memorial service was held with inspirational readings, music and the public reading of over 650 names of family and friends being honored. Heads bowed in silence and prayer during this time in memory of loved ones who have left us over the years.

At the conclusion of this ceremony, the nets were slowly opened and the butterflies were released as the participants watched.

This celebration was endowed by the Gorlach Family. The event will be followed by the annual Butterfly Ball, which will be held on Saturday, March 23, 2013 at Grey Oaks Country Club. For more information visit Avow’s website at www.avowcares.org.
