Here is the FGCU women's basketball all-time leading scorers:
1. Adrianne McNally 1415 (06-10)
2. Sarah Hansen 1414 (09-present)
3. Kelsey Jacobson 1263 (08-12)
4. Shannon Murphy 1185 (07-11)
5. Kate Schrader 1062 (05-07)
MACON, Ga. — Sarah Hansen came up a basket shy Friday of becoming the Florida Gulf Coast University women’s basketball team’s all-time leading scorer.
Hansen had a season-low seven points in the Eagle’s 73-44 win over North Florida in the Atlantic Sun tournament semifinals. In the blowout victory, the McKean, Pa. native played just 20 minutes and took only six shots, another season-low.
But the record is inevitable.
She has 1,414 points in three seasons and needs only two points against Stetson today in the A-Sun championship to break the mark.
“She’s the best player we’ve had at FGCU ever, so at some point she will have that mark,” Eagles’ head coach Karl Smesko said.
Hansen, the 2013 conference player of the year, will go into the Atlantic Sun championship game two points shy of the record. The redshirt junior also is 26th on the A-Sun’s all-time scorers list.
“I didn’t know I was that close, but people have been saying stuff all year; you hear things,” said Hansen, who is also an academic All-American.
Adrianne McNally, who last played in 2009-10, is currently the Eagles’ all-time leading scorer with 1,415 points.
“Adrianne was a great player, so it shows what I’ve been able to do and what my teammates have been able to help me do,” Hansen said. “Right now our main focus is just the championship game.”
Hansen, who averaged 16.9 points per game before tournament play, came away with two assists, five rebounds and three steals in 20 minutes of play.
Hansen’s previous season low in scoring was nine points, which came against Stetson and the University of South Florida.
“[Hansen] played very well,” Smesko said. “In fact, she’s played the best post defense she’s played in a long time.”
