A bookkeeper is accused of stealing more than $800,000 from her employer to fund a gambling habit, according to authorities in Lee County.
Mary Josephine Montes, 50, had worked 23 years at Troyer Brother Florida, a potato company with farms in Lee and Collier counties. Detectives with the Lee County Sheriff’s Office said Montes stole $812,620 from the company over a one-year period.
Investigators said Montes took checks issued to the company and deposited them into her own personal and business accounts. Montes also is accused of issuing checks to former employees of the company and signing them over to herself for deposit.
Montes was arrested at her home, 1302 Immokalee Drive, Saturday by Collier County deputies. She faces felony charges of grand theft and scheme to defraud.
As of Tuesday, Montes remained at the Naples Jail Center awaiting extradition to Lee County.
