Yah, lets see if Marco Island’s City Council is supportive of Jeb Bush’s position on denying illegal immigrants citizenship? That is a issue that City Council will be considering at their Monday, March 18, meeting beginning at 5:30 p.m.
As you may know, Jeb Bush has been reported to support creating “a path to legal status for undocumented immigrants who live in the U.S. and agree to plead guilty to a crime of illegal entry.” But, he also feels “legal status should not include citizenship (since) offering a path to citizenship for the 11 million undocumented immigrants who live in the U.S. could encourage more illegal immigration and undermine the nation’s laws.”
Seems reasonable! Recognize they are here (there is no practicable way to deport them all) and create disincentives for more to come, but don’t reward them with the right to vote. Shouldn’t there be some penalty for their defiling our very citizenship by entering the country illegally? And, isn’t the denial of the right to vote an appropriate penalty?
No matter what your position is regarding immigration reform, this question on granting citizenship and the right to vote to those who have entered this country illegally is one to which each of us should respond. And, attending Monday’s Council meeting would be good way to do so.
