The body of a Marco Island woman was found early Monday in a canal behind her home.
Alice Berg, 71, who lived on Maywood Court, was recovered from a waterway bordered by Maywood Court, North Barfield Drive and North Bahama Avenue, according to the Marco Island Police Department.
Officers were called to Berg’s home around 12:40 a.m. for a call about a missing person. Police began searching around her home and areas where Berg’s family said she frequented.
Around 4 a.m., a Collier County Sheriff’s Office team onboard the agency’s helicopter spotted a body in the canal. Both the Marco Island Police Department and the District 20 Medical Examiner will investigate the circumstances behind Berg’s death.
As of Monday night, no further details of the investigation were available.
