Three bullet holes and signs of a struggle were found in the East Naples home where deputies say a 68-year-old woman shot her husband Monday night, according to an arrest report.
Deputies entering the Provincetown Drive home of Jack and Helen Johns in Glen Eagle Golf & Country Club found the 72-year-old husband dead on the living room floor of a gunshot wound to the right chest, the report said. Helen Johns was arrested on the scene and faces a charge of second-degree murder.
Deputies said they arrived at about 11 p.m. Monday to find Helen Johns in the screened porch of the couple's home, telling responders "he's dead." Inside, deputies found a handgun on a hospital-style bed in the living room near Jack Johns' body. Bullet holes were also found in a television and china cabinet, and a mirror table top and wine glass were shattered, the arrest report said.
Helen Johns declined to speak with deputies after her arrest, requesting an attorney. She requested several times for responders to draw her blood to test for anything in her system, the report said.
Collier County Sheriff's Office records show deputies haven't been dispatched to the home in recent years. Neighbors in the Lansing, Mich., area reported the couple split time between there and Collier County, the Lansing State Journal reported.
A Collier County woman has been charged with second-degree murder in connection with her husband's death.
A sheriff's office statement says 68-year-old Helen Hope Johns was booked Tuesday morning as authorities continue to investigate the death of 72-year-old Jack Johns.
Authorities say deputies were called to the couple's home late Monday night at the request of a concerned relative. When they arrived they found the Jack Johns dead inside the home. He had been shot.
No further information has been released. It wasn't immediately known if Helen Johns has an attorney.
