The Florida Gulf Coast University baseball team opened Atlantic Sun conference play with a 3-2 victory over East Tennessee State University on Friday.
The Eagles (14-4) took control of an early two-run lead in the second inning but allowed ETSU back in the game with a two-run fifth inning. The Eagles, led by the pitching of Ricky Knapp, held ETSU scoreless for the remainder of the game.
Freshman Nick River knocked in the winning RBI in the top of the ninth inning to give Knapp his fifth win of the year.
FGCU will face ETSU for the second game of the three-game series today at 2 p.m. in Johnson City, Tenn.
