Letter to the Editor: Scam alert

Over the weekend my computer was locked by a so-called FBI notice that in short said I had been watching child pornography on it; and if I didn’t pay $300 to unlock it, I could go to jail for two to eight years; and that I had to go to a CVS or other noted place to pick up a payment packet and send the money before they would unlock the computer.

I called my computer company, and they confirmed it was a scam that was circulating. It took much of Monday afternoon to fix — not to mention the cost.

So beware. It looks like the real thing and is intended to scare people into paying. I understand it is almost impossible to track these scams down.

What a world.

People on Marco have to watch more than their computer for scams. There are too many "trusting" people, here, who should do their own due diligence before believing what they are promised by honest looking scammers who come in all shapes and sizes.

Glad to be back! There is another Virus going around that just says "HEY" with address to click on. It has your name in the address bar but that was scammed from someone who actually knows you.

In general if you do not know who the e-mail is from, be very cautious on clicking on anything that is sent to you.

You never know, it might be Klabautermann returning from his sunken ship!

I have been using this, with excellent results.
Consider it as a condom for your hard drive.

Good luck.
