Two employees at a company that runs Ave Maria University’s cafeteria are accused of stealing and cashing their co-workers’ payroll checks.
In late January, a supervisor with Food Services Inc. reported the theft of four payroll checks to the Collier County Sheriff’s Office. The supervisor said the checks could not be located when the employees showed up to the company’s office, which is on campus at 5236 Clancy Ave.
The payroll company later notified Food Services Inc. that a check for $256.84 was cashed at an Immokalee supermarket. The supervisor and the university’s security director began questioning employees and said Enrique Ruiz, 22, and Mark Anthony Ramirez, 18, admitted to stealing the checks, according to an arrest report.
Ruiz told deputies he cashed the $256 check after finding it on the ground, but Ramirez said Ruiz stole the checks from their employer’s office.
Both men were arrested Monday to face charges of uttering a forged instrument and retail theft.
