Letter to the Editor: Preventing an uprising

Timothy McVeigh forever proved that it is not necessary to use guns or assault weapons to kill a large number of people if you are really intent upon doing so. As a matter of fact, he far outdid any shooter in that department and his poor victims were very diverse.

Politicians are not concerned for your lives or the lives of the children at Sandy Hook or Columbine. They fear for their own lives. They fear that the public could rise up and steal the power that they have been wielding recklessly for so long: The power to confiscate the wealth of the citizens and not just the rich.

An armed citizenship prevents the government from exercising the absolute power that it relentlessly seeks. This is why our founders gave us the second amendment. It had nothing to do with hunting or sport.

Misguided anti-gun activists need to educate themselves in regard to The Battle of Athens (sometimes called the McMinn County War): A rebellion led by citizens in Athens and Etowah, Tennessee, United States, against the local government in August 1946. The citizens, including some World War II veterans, accused the local officials of political corruption and voter intimidation.

John,

The bleeding heart liberals will never go along with you, until something happens to them or their loved ones that would then cause them to change their minds and agree with you.

Are you referring to the government of Marco Island or Collier County?

Not that I disagree with Mr. Putnam...I do agree, but the only reason I have a gun is self defense. While I feel wonderfully safe on Marco Island I have been in situations where I had no police nearby and where folks might be tempted to take advantage...has nothing to do with government...but you make your point.

PS> I also own a defibulator...same rationale.

If your heart stops there is a machine that will restart it while you are waiting for an ambulance. A matter of life and death in many instances, especially if the ambulance and hospital are not next door...just like if a policemen is not next door.

I am hopeful that Americans and students of American history grasp the color of professors, not of skin but of content of history lessons taught in schools of higher learning.

In keeping with Marco Island and Southwest Florida as a golfing destination, I offer a hyperlink to an article, titled "The Golf Shot Heard Round the Academic World" by David Feith:

Given the philanthropic nature of this town and county, I urge a review our own alma mater's "ideological pillars" because they may be limiting the future of America by teaching history as a means or progression of goals and objectives.

It may be time to challenge the "intelligentsia" for limited view and lack of scope.
