State Road 29 reopens south of I-75, arson suspected in brush fire

— A fire that started around 2 p.m. Friday in the Big Cypress National Preserve is being called suspicious in origin and an investigation is under way, a preserve spokesman said Saturday.

About 400 acres burned Friday night between County Road 839 and State Road 29, while another 2,500 acres also are an area of concern, said Ryan Stubblebine, public information officer for Big Cypress.

There was no controlled burn scheduled for that area, which is why it is listed as suspicious, he said.

“We don’t have an exact number of acres totally affected,” he said. “We haven’t heard of any homes being evacuated.”

State Road 29 reopened around 7:30 a.m. after it was closed for several hours, authorities said Saturday.

State Road 29 has reopened, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

A 200-acre brush fire has closed State Road 29 south of Interstate 75.

The fire is burning three to five miles south of Alligator Alley on both sides of State Road 29, according to a Collier County Sheriff's Office dispatcher. The fire stems from a 50-acre controlled burn that got out of control.

Some nearby residents alerted authorities late Friday that the fire was approaching their homes. At least one home was evacuated, but it is not immediately clear how close the fire got to the home.

Authorities are putting out road signs to warn drivers about the road closure and possible smoke along Alligator Alley.
