FORT MYERS — Cypress Lake pitcher Richie Lacell was too much for Lely, on the mound and at the plate, as the Panthers downed the Trojans 11-1 on Thursday night at Cypress Lake.
In five innings of the Class 5A regional quarterfinal, Lacell (8-0) struck out 12 while giving up one hit and walking just one batter.
Cypress Lake (19-8) scored in every inning, tacking on the final three runs in the sixth inning that caused the 10-run rule to go into effect. The Panthers will play at Estero in the regional semifinals Tuesday.
Kenny Moss got a harmless single for Lely’s first hit in the fifth inning. The Trojans scored their lone run in the sixth when Jonathan Irigoyen slapped a single off relief pitcher Mitch Kida to score Jesus Palacios.
In five of the six innings, the Panthers scored with two out. Lacell helped his own cause with three hits, knocking in four runs.
Lely’s Tyler Wiltzie pitched the first two innings, giving up two runs, but faced 13 batters.
Corey Tucker started the third inning, giving up two runs, then three more in the fourth, extending the lead to 7-0. Four straight hits, including Lacell’s two-run double in the sixth ended the game.
Lely coach Jason Duesler told his team he was pleased with the season overall, finishing at 14-9.
“I’m proud of you guys, you never gave up,” he said. “I couldn’t have asked for a better group.”
