Prep baseball: Seacrest falls in regional quarterfinals

Even though Seacrest’s Class 3A-Region 3 quarterfinal game against North Palm Beach-Benjamin was twice postponed, Stingrays coach Mark Marsala felt his team was ready for Saturday’s matchup.

That didn’t prove to be the case at Seacrest’s home field as the Stingrays made six errors in the 10-4 loss. It was the second defeat to Benjamin (21-6) this season. In February, the Buccaneers nipped Seacrest 2-0.

Saturday’s game was never that close. Benjamin scored four runs in the first and two in the second to jump out to a 6-0 lead.

Seacrest never recovered, able to scratch out only four hits off Benjamin’s duo of Matt Harris and Chad Swift.

“When the number in the error column is larger than the hit column, you’re not going to win games,” said Marsala, whose team finished 17-11. “We didn’t give ourselves a chance.

“We needed to be ready to play and we weren’t. We didn’t handle the pressure.”

Benjamin, which had ten hits — all singles — off Seacrest pitchers Donato DiNorcia and Jim Quattrocchi, was led by catcher Brian Dolan’s three RBI.

Seacrest scored two in the second and two in the sixth off a pair of sacrifice flies by Bobby Stewart and David DiNorcia.
