Q: We live off Radio Road and have been watching the landscaping of the islands down the middle of our road. It seems they have been working on it for months. Is there a completion date for this project?

A: The median work on Radio Road east of Santa Barbara Boulevard wrapped at the end of April, but the county has to formally sign off on it after reviewing a checklist of specifications, said Michelle Arnold, director of the Collier County Alternative Transportation Modes Department.
“It’s pretty much complete,” Arnold said. “We just haven’t accepted it yet.”
Understand that this work is a project by the Radio Road East Municipal Service Taxing Unit, a special taxing district organized for the planning and funding of beautification and maintenance of landscape improvements on Radio Road from Santa Barbara to Davis Boulevard.
A five-member committee of people living in that MSTU represents residents of more than 10 nearby communities, including The Shores, Sapphire Lakes and Madison Park neighborhoods.
The recent project included the planting of palms and gumbo limbo trees, and using crushed seashells as a different landscaping feature, Arnold said.
“The unique thing about the project is that there is no sod, so it will reduce maintenance costs,” she said.
Although the median landscaping work from Santa Barbara to Radio Lane is completed, the median between Radio Lane and Davis Boulevard is not planted yet because it is part of the Florida Department of Transportation’s widening project for Davis Boulevard, Arnold said.
“Once it’s done, we’ll come up with a design and do the plantings,” she said.
