Men's golf: St. John Neumann grad Edward Figueroa of FGCU picked for NCAA tournament

Monday already had been a pretty good day for Edward Figueroa. It ended well, too.

After advancing out of a U.S. Open local qualifier earlier in the afternoon, Figueroa was selected as an at-large individual for the NCAA tournament on Monday night.

Figueroa, a St. John Neumann graduate, will play in the Tallahassee Regional, which is from May 16-18.

“I was watching the selection show online,” he said. “I’m really excited to be able to continue my season. I wasn’t sure if I was going to get in so this really made my day.”

Figueroa served notice early in his freshman year, shooting an 8-under-par 64 at Miromar Lakes to finish off the best 54-hole score in program history in just his third tournament. He was named the Atlantic Sun Freshman of the Year, second-team all-conference, and was ranked 169th nationally by Golfstat.

“It’s a great day for Edward, his family and the FGCU men’s golf program,” FGCU coach Brent Jensen said. “To have two individuals make it to postseason in two years is the next best thing to the team making it.

“It gives us an opportunity to continue to grow our program despite a not-great team season this year. Edward deserves this opportunity. He has worked really hard this year and is really talented on top of it.”
