— In addition to relocating its corporate headquarters to Estero, Hertz is also planning a 50-car sales and lease retail lot on its future site on the southeast corner of Williams Road and U.S. 41, a Lee County leader said.

Speaking at the Estero Council of Community Leaders meeting Friday, Lee County Commissioner Cecil Pendergrass said Hertz wants to lease and sell cars from its headquarters, too.

“I have some concerns about that,” Pendergrass told the council. “I didn’t know how you felt.”

Pendergrass said he would bring the issue back to the council once he learns more.

Hertz is purchasing a roughly 38-acre parcel owned by Oakbrook Properties. It is part of a nearly 500-acre development that includes retail, residential and commercial space.

Hertz did submit an amended development and zoning application with the county Friday afternoon, said Mary Gibbs, Lee County community development director, but she could not confirm the details of the application because it has not yet been reviewed.

Ned Dewhirst, senior vice president of Florida operations for Oakbrook Properties in Bonita Springs, also spoke at the Estero council meeting. He said Hertz seems to want to create a “first-class style” complex, and it could include a “50-space maximum car lot.”

“They do want to do leasing and sales,” Dewhirst said. “We haven’t seen any details.”

He told the Daily News that Hertz did not intend to have repair, maintenance or servicing operations for its retail lot. Whatever the company builds will have to comply with the Coconut Point design guide that sets standards for architecture.

“The look you see out there will continue,” he said.

Jack Lienesch, a member of the Estero Community Planning Panel, which will also give recommendations to Lee County commissioners later this month, said the car lot probably won’t be a deal breaker.

“We are going to look at it carefully, but we’re sure it can be done in an aesthetic manner so that everybody is pleased,” he said.

Hertz’s development and zoning application will get expedited review, Dewhirst said.

“This is going to go really fast,” he said.

Gibbs said the application will go before Lee County commissioners in early August.

Dewhirst said he will speak before the Home Owners Association at Rapallo, a gated-community located beside the Hertz property, Tuesday at 6 p.m.

“We’re just trying to get the word out and keep the community involved,” he said. “We’re not trying to push this through.”
