Coed Softball is Back! The City of Marco Island Coed Softball League is back for its spring season. This year the league added two new teams to its lineup for a total of six. Each team will play each other twice for a total of 10 games.

Coming back are last year’s champion, Rookies Bar & Grill, along with Kretch’s Restaurant, Stan’s Idle Hour, Snook Inn Restaurant and new teams, Toucan’s Bar & Grill and the city of Marco Island.

In the first week’s games the City team was defeated by the Snook Inn, 15-12, with both teams playing well. Pat Steward and Jim Goddall led Snook Inn, while Jim Hodgdon, Todd Swanders and John Sally led the City

Rookies came in a bit rusty and lost to Kretch’s 15-11, Scott Gibbs, Marc Canady and Chris Broxson led Rookies, while Joe Pitrone, Bruce Kretschmer and Even Holewinski led Kretch’s to victory. Newcomer Toucan’s handed Stan’s a loss, 7-5, behind Luke King, Jimmy Blankenship and Alysha Sullivan. Lee Bergen, Greg St Amour and Josh Ferris led Stan’s.

Week two saw Rookies looking more like the team that went undefeated last year, downing Stan’s, 19-4. Sean Shea, Casey Canady and Michelle Richardson led the way for Rookies, while Lee Bergen and Brad Frazier led Stan’s. Toucan’s showed it may be the team to beat this year, notching its second victory with an impressive win over Snook Inn, 21-4. Salem Lake had a home run for Toucan‘s, along with hits from Monika Huber, Vicki Carter and Jared Wagner. Teresa Gangl and Jim Goodall led the Snook. A bad second inning for the City, where it gave up 10 runs, put them too far behind Kretch’s and lost their second game, 18-9. Kretch’s was led by Chris Nygard, Wally Kroeschel and Even Holewinski. The city team was led by Samantha Malloy’s three hits and Joey Irogoyen.

Coed Softball is played every Thursday at Winterberry field with games beginning at 6 p.m. Come out and watch some exciting games and pick up a hot dog while you’re there.

The complete schedule can be found on the city website, www.cityofmarcoisland.com, then to Parks & Recreation, Adult Softball.
