A good old-fashioned goal-line stand in the final minutes of the game followed an explosive third quarter and made the difference in the outcome Friday night as the host Lely Trojans closed out their regular season with a 14-12 Senior Night victory over rival Barron Collier.
A high snap and botched punt by Lely gave the Cougars a first-and-goal at the Trojans’ 7-yard line following Chris Williams’ recovery of the loose football. But four straight runs came up short of the go-ahead score for BC. On a fourth-and-goal-to-go at the Trojans’ 1-yard line, Lely’s Mike Duprat and Tupac Isme stopped Davonte McClendon short of the end zone for the game-saver. On the play prior to that, Lely’s Adam Johnson made a huge hit to stop McClendon short of paydirt.
After a scoreless first half in which Collier was held to just 20 total yards, the Cougars got on the board first with a 48-yard run by quarterback Brian Chancy. Niko Gomez added the point-after and later in the quarter, also came through with a 22-yard field goal.
