Garden Club donates Blue Star Memorial Marker
Marco Island’s Calusa Garden Club donated a Blue Star Memorial Marker during the Nov. 11 Veterans Day program held at Veterans Community Park. The marker honors all veterans who have served our country, past, present, and future. During times of war families placed a blue star in their window if a family member was serving in the military so it was fitting to place a blue star on the memorial. Calusa Garden Club president, Dale DeFeo, spearheaded the project and spoke at the ceremony. The sign will need regular refurbishing due to our salt air and humid climate and the garden will need constant maintenance. Donations of any size will be greatly appreciated and can be sent to Calusa Garden Club of Marco Island, P. O. Box 1763, Marco Island, FL 34145. Calusa Garden Club is a nonprofit organization and donations are tax deductable.
Fla. state senators want speed limit raised to 75
Two Florida state senators want to let motorists drive faster on the state’s highways. Sen. Jeff Brandes, R-St. Petersburg, and Sen. Jeff Clemens, D-Lake Worth, are filing a bill that would allow the state to raise the speed limit up to 75 miles per hour on some highways. Brandes said his bill would allow the state to raise the limit if traffic engineers believe is it safe. He noted that the state has not reviewed its speed limit since 1996. The speed limit on interstate highways is 70 miles per hour. The limit is 65 miles per hour for highways with a divided median and 60 miles per hour for other roads overseen by the state. The bill would increase those limits by 5 miles per hour.
