I just love October. Typically, the month is packed full of family-friendly events for all ages. Many have a Halloween-type theme, which is perfect for my kids, who love to play dress-up year-round.

Dig into Reading

Encourage young minds to read with Collier County Library’s fall reading program, which kicks off Tuesday, Oct. 1, and is recommended for children birth to age 5. Pick up a board game at your local library and complete the activity with your child. Bring the game board to the Children’s Desk for a sticker to mark your child’s progress. Complete 17 of 20 activities and you take home a free book. Information: tinyurl.com/km58cot

Fire Rescue

My little boy loves anything to do with firetrucks, and on Saturday, Oct. 5, Home Depot to the (Fire) Rescue is a great way for him to learn some do-it-yourself skills and tool safety. The once-a-month workshop features various themes and for October, kids will build a fire rescue plane. For ages 5 to 12 and meets from 9 a.m. to noon. Registration is required.

Zombie Outbreak

Take your preteen video game junkie to the Zombie Laser Maze at Gulf Coast Town Center, where your camp is running low in supplies as it’s overrun by a zombie outbreak. It’s almost like “World War Z” in real life without the pulse-pounding anxiety I felt while watching it. The maze is open from 5 to 10 p.m. Thursdays and Fridays and 2 to 10 p.m. Saturdays through Nov. 2 on the grass lot west of Aurelio’s Pizza. $5 entry fee.

Catch a fish

Your kids can learn angling basics at Bass Pro Shops’ Kids Fishing. Dip your fishing pole in the Bass Pro lake from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 5. It’s a fun event for any future angler At Bass Pro Shops, 10040 Gulf Center Drive, Fort Myers. Information: 239-461-7800
