ORLANDO (AP) — Florida Gov. Rick Scott is cancelling plans to attend a Republican Party event in central Florida because of Tropical Storm Karen.

Scott was scheduled to speak Friday at the event where the Republican Party of Florida will raise money and prepare for the looming candidacy of Republican turned Democrat Charlie Crist.

But Scott changed his plans because of the potential threat Karen poses to Florida. The storm is poised to become the first named storm to hit the U.S. in what has been a relatively quiet hurricane season.

Scott is now planning to meet with state emergency officials.

The state party is holding its Statesman's Dinner Friday evening at the Contemporary Resort at Walt Disney World.

The event comes nearly a year before Scott's attempt to win a second term.
