It doesn’t feel like fall yet here in SWFL, but we can still usher in the fall fun (read a list of fall happenings from Showcase). As October gets rolling, families should start scheduling their outings, and this week, there are some exciting ways to get things going.
Cool After School
Entertain your teens on early-release day at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 9 at the Naples Regional Library, 650 Central Ave., Naples. They can make a snack with library staff and vote on which movie to watch from three titles, “Men In Black 3,” Oz the Great and Powerful” or “John Carter.” Registration not required. Stop that bully
Help your kids prepare for a night of trick or treating at the Kids Self Defense class, 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 12 at Impact Martial Arts, 5926 Premier Way, unit 128 in Naples. The free class teaches kids, ages 5 to 12, how to deal with peer pressure and how to say no. They will learn physical and verbal defense skills as well as awareness skills to avoid predators. Fun for Fall

Come kick off the fall season at Fleamasters’ Annual Great Pumpkin Festival, Oct. 11-13. The three-day event features a pumpkin patch where you can adopt a pumpkin ($5 to $15 each) to personalize and take home and create a memory at the “Pumpkin Farmer’s Family Photo Spot.” Stilt walker Way Too Tall Torrie and face-painter Twinkle Toes the Clown entertain Saturday and Sunday. 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday-Sunday. Costumes for cheap
Save some cash and keep those costly costumes out of landfills by trading yours on National Costume Swap Day. Participants can drop off clean, gently used costumes, masks or accessories from newborn to size 12 in Naples at EcoBaby and Home, 2355 Vanderbilt Beach Road, Ste. 150 (239-596-2661) or in Fort Myers at Savvy Exchange, 8711 Cypress Lake Drive (239-437-5988). The swap is Saturday, Oct. 12; times vary. Drop off costumes before Saturday and receive a voucher for the swap or bring them on Saturday.
