Around Town: U.S. 41 East intersection reconfiguration project should begin soon

The road construction project should begin shortly for the reconfiguration of the intersection at U.S. 41 East and Collier Boulevard (County Road 951).

First, the boarded-up old gas station on the northwest corner will come down. Hooray! I’m so happy to say that. In its place will be a required stormwater retention pond with a fountain and as soon as funding becomes available, a lovely landscaped area surrounding the pond. I’m even putting in a pitch for lighting.

During construction the traffic will be routed around the construction area to give the workers a safe work environment. At the same time the public utilities will be removed and relocated.

There will be some challenging times during this 24-month construction period, as travelers will be rerouted around the construction, but in the end we will be able to travel much safer within this intersection.

Once construction has begun, the Florida Department of Transportation will begin the second process — widening U.S. 41 East from Collier Boulevard to Greenway Road from two lanes to six lanes, and from Greenway Road to Six L’s Farm Road from two lanes to four lanes.

The median within the intersection will be built for the future overpass (not scheduled to be built until about 2025), with middle sections being as wide as 70 feet. Hopefully by the time this project is completed, median landscaping funds will become available to finish the look, which is being modeled after the Golden Gate Parkway project.

While this construction will make it challenging for shoppers to get to and from the Shoppes of Eagle Creek, please make sure you meet that challenge and keep these shopkeepers in business. We have some great shops like Lowe’s, Staples, Hoots and The Fresh Market in that center and wouldn’t want to lose a single one of them, plus more shops planned within this coming year, such as Culver’s on U.S. 41.

It’s always a pleasure to spread good news of another fine retail establishment coming to our community. Shirley Calhoun, the president of East Naples Merchants Association, sent me a note to say a new GNC store has located in the Shoppes of Hammock Cove at the corner of U.S. 41 East and Thomasson Road. So glad they have chosen our community to open their newest store.

I’ve been meaning to tell you about a laundromat. I never use a laundromat because I just drop things off at my friendly dry cleaner and have them do the job.

However, I tried to wash and dry my king-size mattress cover in my own appliances. What a mess I made! The mattress cover was so large that when I dried it in my dryer it melted the inside material!

I decided to try a laundromat to wash and dry my new one, plus my homemade Amish quilt, so I started checking them out and quickly found a clean, well lit, friendly, safe laundromat in the Towne Centre at U.S. 41 East, located in front of the newly updated movie theater.

Upon entering, I felt like I had found new friends. They were so helpful and friendly that it surprised me. Everything came out beautifully clean and fresh, so I thought just maybe someone else might want to use this information to wash their big stuff as well.

Good news for pickleball players! The Collier County Parks and Recreation Department will be converting the old roller hockey rink at the East Naples Community Park to become a pickleball court! The work has begun, so you players who are looking for a court, watch closely! By Christmas, you should have a new location to enjoy.
