Collier County Sheriff's deputies arrested a man and a woman Thursday morning in connection with the shooting of two men in Golden Gate.

Fear pervades at Golden Gate apartment complex where 2 were shot

Residents of Mer Soleil apartments in Golden Gate gathered outside the scene of a shooting that left two people injured Thursday morning. Many were afraid to speak to reporters about what they call escalating violence in the area.

One neighbor near unit 206 where the shooting took place, texted her friend and neighbor about 2 a.m. alerting her to the early morning events. At 8 a.m. the pair gathered outside, watching as a few relaxed deputies stood guard in the parking lot. Authorities declined to say whether additional deputies were inside 206, which is believed to be the crime scene.

The women both are moving, one out of town, the other into a home she purchased. They declined to give their names for fear of retaliation.

They said moving has nothing to do with the shooting, but that the gunshots punctuated the urgency of their decisions. Things have been getting worse, they said, with an incident of domestic violence and reports of drug sales. Sheriff's officials could not immediately confirm those reports.

A representative for Mer Soleil's leasing office wouldn't answer questions and said the company has no comment on the shooting.
