Marco Eagles teams play tough: Youth football has plenty of action

The Southwest Florida Youth Football League is kicking into high gear, with many competitive teams.

With teams that have played at least two games, the Under 6 Lee County Hawks are 2-0-1. In Under 8, Dunbar is 2-0 and no one has scored against them.

The U10 teams are bunched with South Naples Pirates at 3-0, Dunbar Rattlers, 2-0 and Marco Eagles, 2-1. The Pirates and Rattlers remain unscored upon.

In U12 play again it is the Pirates at 3-0 and Dunbar, 2-0, with neither team scored upon. Close behind is Golden Gate at 2-1. In U15 the Pirates are 2-0.

Games at Fort Myers High on Saturday include: U6, South Naples vs. Dunbar, 9 a.m.; U8, South Naples vs. Dunbar, 10:30 a.m.; U10, South Naples vs. Dunbar, 12:30 p.m.; U12, South Naples vs. Dunbar, 2 p.m.; U15, South Naples vs. Dunbar at 4 p.m.

Games at Mariner High include: U6, Naples Gator vs. Lee County Hawks, 9 a.m.; U8, Naples vs. Lee County, 10:30 a.m.; U10, Naples vs. Lee County, 10 a.m.; U12, Naples vs. Lee County, 2:30 p.m.; Marco Island vs. Lee County, 4:30 p.m.; U12, Naples vs. Lee County, 4 p.m. and U15, Naples vs. Lee County, 6:30 p.m.

Steve Quinn, league president, named some of the top performers. The Player of the Week was Henderson Francois of South Naples. He rushed for 140 yards, with three touchdowns and five solo tackles in U12 play.

Also in U12, Golden Gate’s Elias Preciado threw for 174 yards and two touchdowns. Teammate Nikki Liberal grabbed five interceptions in their win over Marco Island, 19-14.

The lead changed hands as Marco’s Cooper Nettles returned a pass interception for a score. Jessica Pierce kicked the point after, good for two points. Richard Reisinger threw a touchdown pass to Justin Webb, but they couldn’t hold off the Tigers.

FBU team tryouts

With 64 regional teams, the Football National Championship will be a major event. Team Southwest Florida will have tryouts for athletes in 6th through 8th grades at Fleischmann Park in Naples at 1 p.m. on Sept. 15. Registration $35, which includes shirt. Register at www.fbunc.com.

Marco Cheerleading tryouts
