The proposal for cooperation between the Naples Fire Department and North Naples Fire District (NNFD) deserves another at-bat.
The proposal, which calls for joint training and sharing of equipment, was shot down by the Naples City Council in November by a 4-3 vote because of apparent concerns about losing autonomy.
That was November. This is February, with a different City Council and, perhaps, a different outlook. The proposal should be reconsidered.
Put together by a blue ribbon committee consisting of Marvin Easton, Mayor John Sorey, former Greater Naples Chamber President Mike Reagen, NNFD Commissioner John McGowen and fire chiefs from each department, the plan addresses concerns in Naples about response times to medical calls and shortfalls in training and certain equipment.
