Division leaders, Mutual of Omaha Bank of the Island Division and CJ’s on the Bay of the Marco Division, remained on top with victories in the Marco Island Senior Softball League.
Many of the games were close, with key defensive plays being the difference.
Mutual of Omaha Bank, 11, Sasso’s, 9
The Bank eked out another win over Sasso’s when right fielder John Barrett made a running catch of a fly ball and then gunned down a Sasso’s player attempting to score at home plate for a double play. John Luegering drilled three hits, John Haskins clobbered a three-run homer and Bill Thompson smacked a triple and had three RBI for the Bank. Mike Endelman sprayed three hits for Sasso’s and drove in three runs. John Gross and Jimmy Cuevas drove in two runs each.
Brewery, 14, Nacho Mama’s, 10
Tom Gazzillo, Jim Ramage, Nick Jacullo, Phil Holmes and Bill Shurina lined three hits each as part of the 26-hit attack for the Brewery. Jacullo belted a three-run home run and Gazzillo slammed a solo shot. Gazzillo had four RBI and Holmes, who smacked a triple, had three RBI. John Remhoff ripped three hits for Nacho’s. Rich Small, who hoisted a three home run, had four RBI. Ed Hamill smashed a triple and drove in two runs as did Jerry Engel in the loss.
DaVinci’s, 22, Sand Bar, 14
DaVinci’s hitting machine produced 29 hits, with Craig Cunningham and Jack Martin pounding the ball for four hits each. All Cunningham’s hits were doubles. Teammates Steve Hummel, Jim Williams, Tom Porter and Ron Hobson each nailed three hits. Williams and Hobson each blasted three-run home runs. Williams and Hummel recorded four RBI, Hobson and Bill Wright three and Tom Tankersley two. Sand Bar’s Scott Byers and Roger Fleming hammered four hits each, with Fleming crushing a triple. Tom Angelo knocked out three hits, while driving in three runs. Ralph Sieja and; Byers accounted for two RBI each.
Sand Bar, 18, Brewery, 9
Tom Angelo and Dave Banghart smacked four hits each, while winning pitcher Jim George slammed a home run. George and Dave Droddy each had three hits for Sand Bar. Mike Puskar crushed a triple and had four RBI, as did George, while Ralph Sieja and Banghart had three each and Angelo and Droddy each had two. The Brewery’s Chuck Reich peppered out four hits, with three doubles. Jim Gilligan and George Bennett had three hits each, while Reich drove in four runs and Phil Holmes had two.
DaVinci’s, 15, Sasso’s, 14
Murph Knapke threw out the tying run in the bottom of the ninth inning to give DaVinci’s the win. DaVinci’s benefitted by 12 walks in the game. Steve Hummel, Tom Tankersley and Larry Anspach drilled three hits each to provide an offensive punch. Anspach, a triple drove for three RBI, with Jim Williams driving in three. Sasso’s John Gross and Rich Krumholz ripped four hits each. Mike Endelman slammed a triple while driving home three runs. Art Sinisi had three RBI and Tom Pugh two.
Mutual of Omaha Bank, 17, Nacho Mama’s, 3
John Haskins and Ed Kingsbury mauled the ball for four hits each, with Kingsbury slamming a two-run home run for the Bank. Winning pitcher Lou Wolfenson and John Barrett had three hits each. Barrett, Bill Thompson and Steve Clark cracked triples. Kingsbury and Herm Griffith had three RBI, with Haskins, Ed Brack and John DeRosa each recording two. Rick Benedetti and Jeff Hultgren lined three hits each for Nacho Mama’s.
CJ’s on the Bay, 10, Porky’s, 6
Tony Brock rattled out three hits, with Paul Burnett and Fred Kramer walloping home runs and Fran Diotte slapping a triple for CJ’s. Pitcher Dan Callahan limited Porky’s to nine hits. Jim White and Joe Barry contributed three hits each for Porky’s, with Denny Lello driving in two runs.
Rookies, 10, Stonewalls, 6
Marco Division’s leading home run hitter Ray Niemeyer of Rookies cracked his seventh of the season, a two-run blow, as part of his three hits. John Ranieri also had three hits. Tom Bishard and winning pitcher Angelo Polizzi had two each. Bishard drove in three runs and Nick Brooks two. Chet Dal Bianco and Dick DeAnna had two hits each for Stonewalls.
Joey’s Pizza, 18, Crazy Flamingo, 7
Gary Schneider, Jim Vitas, Denny Davis, Bob Grant and Bill Kaschube stung the ball for three hits each, with Bill Diamond having two for Joey’s Pizza. Schneider, who cracked two triples, racked up four RBI, Kaschube three and Grant two. Chuck Wilson powdered the ball for four hits, with Keith Stought and Roger Wise having two each. Wilson and Frank Dooley each chased home two runs in the loss.
Stonewalls, 8, Crazy Flamingo, 4
Fran Roche’s three hits, one a triple, coupled with two hits by Bob Smith and Ed Kopecky, were keys to Stonewalls win. Kopecky kept Flamingo’s bats in check, giving up nine hits, which included two by Steve Slaggie and a triple by Jim White.
Rookies, 13, Porky’s, 9
Rookies Steve Roberts, Jerry Lenhoff, Tom Bishard, Nick Brooks, John Ranieri, Pat Comerford and Dan O’Sullivan all knocked out two hits in the win. Comerford crunched two triples, O’Sullivan one. Ray Niemeyer slammed his eighth home run. Dave Coward and Denny Lello drilled three hits each for Porky’s, while Jim Battye and John Hedges each had two. Lello drove in four runs and Larry Tuttle two in the loss. Rookies’ pitcher Angelo Polizzi recorded three strikeouts.
CJ’s on the Bay, 19, Joey’s Pizza, 16
A nine-run fourth inning by CJ’s wiped out a 6-3 deficit and led to CJ’s win. Fred Kramer and Bob Beaver each had four hits and Dan Cody and Tony Brock three each. Fran Diotte and Brock clocked home runs, while Leon Schmitt tripled. Diotte had five RBI, Brock and Beaver three each and Kramer two. Jack Stevenson recorded five hits, including two triples for Joey’s. Teammates Jim Vitas and Bill Kaschube each had four RBI, while Gary Schneider, Lee Dilk and Jim O’Meara each chipped in with two. Bob Grant and Kaschube drove in three runs, while Stevenson and John Gill added two each.
Rookies, 18, Crazy Flamingo, 9
Rookies romped over Flamingo’s with winning pitcher Angelo Polizzi banging out four hits. Tom Bishard, John Ranieri, Pat Comerford and Larry Laird nailed three hits each, including a Comerford a triple. Ray Niemeyer had two hits. Ranieri drove in four runs, Niemeyer and Polizzi three each, Bishard and Nick Brooks each two. Joe Furst and Ray Zielinski lined three hits each for Flamingo, with Bob Monaco, Chuck Wilson, Frank Dooley, Tom Patterson, Rich Larkin and Roger Wise each having two. Joe Furst had four RBI.
Porky’s, 10, Joey’s Pizza, 5
Jim Conway had three hits, including a triple, while Jim Battye, Paddy O’Connor, Pat Coraggio and John Hedges had two hits each to pace Porky’s. Winning pitcher Butch Monson had a triple and drove in two runs. Joey’s Jack Stevenson had three hits, with Bill Kaschube and Buff Morris having two each.
CJ’s on the Bay, 19, Stonewalls, 1
CJ’s stoned Stonewalls in a mercy rule game, called after six innings. Dan Cody, Fran Diotte and Warren Uhl were the main stoners with three hits each and Fred Kramer and Ron Townsend each had two. Diotte and Uhl blasted home runs, Cody and Paul Burnett triples. Diotte racked up five RBI, Uhl four, Kramer three, Cody, Burnett and Tony Brock each two. John Gill had two hits and Fran Roach whacked a triple for Stonewalls as winning pitcher Dan Callahan limited the rest of the team to six hits.
