The Marco Island Men’s Senior Softball League began its 15th season on Monday. There are two new team sponsors, Stonewalls Restaurant and Porky’s Restaurant and Lounge in the Marco Division, with Mutual Bank of Omaha moving to the Island Division.
The new League website www.marcoseniorsoftballleague.com has team rosters, schedules, and other pertinent information on league play and activities.
The big bats were plenty in opening games. Here are the results by divisions:
Brewery, 13, DaVinci’s, 12
The Brewery had to rally numerous times before winning in extra innings, scoring four runs in the bottom of the 10th inning. Newcomer to the league Phil Holmes drilled four hits and drove in three runs for the Brewery. Tom McCullough also drove in three runs and Jim Ramage two in the win. Steve Hummel and newcomer Bill Wright each crushed a home run for DaVinci’s. Wright and Doug Patton each had three hits with Wright chasing home four runs and Hummel two.

Jim Blankenship nailed three hits for Sand Bar, with Dave Droddy slamming a triple. Tom Angelo and Scott Byers had two RBI each in the loss.
Nacho Mama’s, 13, Sasso’s, 8
Slugger Rich Small started the 2014 season with a bang, blasting a grand slam home run as part of his five RBI performance for Nacho Mama’s. John DeRosa racked up three hits, Rick Benedetti and John Barrett each drove in two runs and John Cavanagh smacked a triple in the win. Sasso’s John Gross, Tom Pugh, and rookie Michael Arnold had three hits each. Arnold and Pugh each cracked a triple, with Pugh collecting two RBI.
Rookies, 12, Joey’s Pizza, 7
Rookies overcame a 7-2 deficit to win the game in 40-degree weather, along with a 15-20 mph wind. Rookies Ray Niemeyer, Danny O’Sullivan, and first-year players Tom Bishard and Pat Comerford had two hits each. Niemeyer launched a two-run home run and Bishard nailed a triple. Joe Kruse and O’Sullivan each drove home two runs. Joey’s Jim Vitas stung the ball for three hits, Bill Kaschube and Dick DeAnna chalked up two hits each, while Chet Dal Bianco cranked a triple. Porky’s, 20, Stonewalls, 5
In a game shortened due to the 15-run mercy rule, Porky’s made the team’s entry into the league a memorable one. Unfortunately for Stonewalls it might be one to forget. Winning pitcher Butch Monson limited Stonewalls to only six hits with Dick DeAnna driving in two of Stonewalls five runs. Monson and rookie Pat O’Connor lined three hits each, while Dave Coward, Don Schwartz, Daryl Judson, Jim White, Jim Conway, and John Hedges each peppered two hits.
