The 2014 season is off to a very competitive level of play. In the Island Division, Nacho Mama’s and the Brewery are tied for first with Mutual of Omaha Bank and Sand Bar one game behind.

ISLAND DIVISION

Mutual of Omaha Bank, 14, Sasso’s, 13

The Bank had opened a 10-3 lead over Sasso’s through seven innings. Sasso’s then rallied to take over the lead, 13 10, in the top of the ninth. The Bank tied the game with John DeRosa coming to bat with the bases loaded and two outs. DeRosa jumped on the first pitch and lined a base hit, driving in the winning run. DeRosa and Ed Kingsbury each drove in three runs with John Haskins and Herm Griffith driving in two. Bill Thompson had three hits, with Tom Whitlock and Jim Green pounding triples. John Gross and Jimmy Cuevas stung the ball for four hits each, with Art Sinisi tagging three for Sasso’s. Cuevas and Sinisi had three RBI apiece, Gross and Tom Pugh had two each. Losing pitcher Bill Griffin cracked a triple.

Brewery, 14, Nacho Mama’s, 6

Phil Holmes and John Sherwin each lashed out three hits, paving the way for the Brewery. Nick Jacullo, Jim Ramage and Holmes each smacked a triple, with Jacullo and Ramage collecting three RBI each. Sherwin and Bill Kayhart each had two RBI. Rich Small mashed a triple for Nacho’s and Jerry Engel drove in two runs.

Sand Bar, 10, DaVinci’s, 9

It was Davinci’s second straight extra-inning loss. The score was tied at 88 when Sand Bar scored two runs in the top of the 10th and held DaVinci’s to one in the bottom of the inning. Scott Byers, made key defensive plays in left field, He and Steve Clark drilled three hits, with Byers slamming a triple. Jim Blankenship and Dave Droddy had two RBI each. Craig Cunningham, Steve Hummel and Larry Anspach riveted three hits each for DaVinci’s. Teammates Bill Wright and Jim Williams each drove in two runs.

Sand Bar, 11, Brewery, 10

Sand Bar held off a ninth-inning rally by the Brewery for the team’s second win. Sand Bar’s Jim Blankenship plastered the ball for four hits and Dave Droddy three. Mike Puskar and Roger Fleming drove in three runs with Fleming’s coming on a home run. Charlie Lamb zinged four hits for the Brewery. Jim Ramage had three RBI and a home run, Lamb and Nick Jacullo had two RBI, with Jacullo nailing a triple.

Nacho Mama’s, 18, Mutual of Omaha Bank, 11

Nacho’s lashed out 23 hits, including three home runs in the win. Rich Small and Ray Kane had three hits apiece. Kane and Rick Benedetti each had two-run homers, with John Sherwin crushing a grand slam home run. Jerry Engel and Mike Puskar each homered. Ed Brack ripped three doubles for the Bank, with John DeRosa driving in three runs and Bill Thompson two.

DaVinci’s, 12, Sasso’s, 9

Steve Hummel pummeled the ball for three hits, including a home run and a triple, giving him four RBI for DaVinci’s. Larry Anspach smashed a triple and had two RBI as did Craig Cunningham and Doug Patton. Rich Krumholz, Jack O’Brien and John Gross lined three hits each for Sasso’s. O’Brien and Art Sinisi each drove in two runs.

Nacho Mama’s, 23, DaVinci’s, 8

Nacho’s pounded DaVinci’s, resulting in the mercy rule at the end of eight innings. Jeff Hultgren tagged five hits, Ray Kane, four and Jerry Engel and John Barrett three each. Rich Small racked up six RBI, John Cavanagh five, and Hultgren three, while Engel. Kane, and Barrett each had two. Craig Cunningham and Jim Williams each laced three hits for Davinci’s and Steve Hummel drove in two runs.

Sasso’s, 11, Sand Bar, 9

Sasso’s earned the win coming from behind, tying the game in the ninth inning and scoring two runs in the 10th. Winning pitcher Bill Griffin then shut out Sand Bar in the bottom of the inning. Jon Gross, Rich Krumholz, Art Sinisi, Jimmy Cuevas and Grady Fuller banged out three hits each. Gross had three RBI and Cuevas two. Jim George had three hits for Sand Bar and two RBI. Wayne Bombaci smacked a three-run home run.

Brewery, 17, Mutual of Omaha Bank, 6

Bill Kayhart ripped four hits, while Tom Gazzillo, Charlie Lamb, Jim Gilligan, and Tom McCullough had three each as part of a 26-hit attack by the Brewery. Winning pitcher Chuck Reich and Gazzillo crushed a triple each with Nic Jacullo smacking a two run homerun. Gazzillo racked up four RBI, Kayhart, three; with Lamb, Gilligan, and Phil Holmes having two RBI each. Herm Griffith lined three hits, Bill Thompson and John Barrett drove in two runs for the Bank.

MARCO DIVISION

CJ’s on the Bay, 11, Porky’s, 10

CJ’s was able to hold off Porky’s after jumping out to a 7-4 lead. Warren Uhl paced CJ’s, recording three hits and two RBI. Dan Cody and Jim Yount contributed two hits each. Pat O’Connor collected three hits for Porky’s, with Dave Coward and Jim Battye each having two hits and two RBI. Coward’s RBI came on a towering home run.

Stonewalls, 17, Rookies, 7

Thirteen walks and some shoddy fielding led to Rookies demise. Fran Roche and Dick Corley each had two hits and Roche, Corley, Paul Womack, Ed Kopecky, Al Cenicola, Chet Dal Bianco and Dick DeAnna all had two RBI. Tom Bishard rapped three hits and Jerry Lenhoff had two hits, one a solo home run. Bishard and Dan O’Sullivan each knocked in two runs each.

Joey’s Pizza, 9, Crazy Flamingo, 4

Bill Kaschube pitched a five hitter against Flamingo. Denny Davis was the catalyst for the Dough Boys banging out three hits. Jack Stevenson, Joe Callahan and Jim O’Meara each had two. Buff Morris and Leroy Fishleigh drove in two runs apiece. Flamingo’s Chuck Wilson drove in two of the team’s four runs.

Joey’s Pizza, 13, Stonewalls, 10

Joey’s Pizza rallied in the bottom of the sixth after Stonewalls had taken the lead, 10-9, in the top of the sixth. Joe Callahan’s three run home run in the sixth was the difference. Bob Grant peppered three hits for Joey’s, with Bill Kaschube, Jim O’Meara and Buff Morris having two each. Callahan ended the game with four RBI, Kaschube three, and Morris two. Bob Smith and George Kirk zinged three hits each and Fran Roche two for Stonewalls. Smith, Ed Kopecky, Chet Dal Bianco and Mike Gallagher were credited with two RBI.

Crazy Flamingo, 18, Porky’s, 5

Ray Zielinski and Dom Fiorda rapped out three hits each and Dan Stanard two for Crazy Flamingo’s first win. Zielinski tripled and Fiorda, Frank Dooley and Tom Patterson two RBI, with Stanard racking up four RBI. Dave Coward, who crushed a solo homerun, Don Schwartz, Jim Battye and Butch Monson all had two hits each for Porky’s.

Rookies, 10, CJ’s on the Bay, 8

Rookies knocked off previously undefeated CJ’s on the Bay behind the nine-hitter tossed by Ray Niemeyer. He help himself by clobbering a three-run home run. Danny O’Sullivan tagged three hits and Tom Bishard two. Fred Kramer and Tony Brock each had two hits, with Warren Uhl driving in two runs for CJ’s.

ISLAND DIVISION STANDINGS

Nacho Mama’s and Brewery, 3-1, Mutual of Omaha Bank and Sand Bar, 2-2, DaVinci’s and Sasso’s, 1-3.

MARCO DIVISION STANDINGS

Rookies, Joey’s Pizza, CJ’s on the Bay, 2-1, Porky’s, Stonewalls, Crazy Flaimingo, 1-2.
