The Lely boys soccer season came to an end in improbable fashion on Wednesday night.

The Trojans nearly upset host Golden Gate but fell 3-2 in overtime in a Class 3A-District 14 semifinals on goals only minutes apart.

Titans senior forward Sam Gomez scored on a breakaway just 28 seconds into the extra period to lead Golden Gate into Friday’s final against Immokalee.

Just moments before Gomez’s heroics, the Trojans lead 2-1 and were on the verge of victory.

With under two minutes left in regulation and the referee keeping time, Cesar Rivera headed in a Titans’ corner kick to tie the match at 2-2. A second after Rivera’s score, the referee blew the whistle ending regulation.

On goals from Bobby Garcia and Jose Almaraz, Lely held a 2-0 lead until Jose Cruz-Aguilar scored for the Titans with just under seven minutes to play.

Lely ended its season with a 16-9-1 record.
