Prep boys basketball: Lely beats Naples in triple overtime thriller

When Naples and Lely basketball teams play, overtime is nothing new.

But on Wednesday night, the two rivals went to three overtimes at Naples.

Lely’s Zach Gober ended the craziness with a free throw, lifting the Trojans over the Golden Eagles, 83-82.

“We played a spectacular first half, but made some critical mistakes in the last four minutes to allow Lely to cut the lead,” Naples coach Pierre Eaton said.

Naples led 43-32 at halftime after sprinting to a 22-10 lead at the end of one quarter.

“In the first quarter, they really pushed us around,” Lely coach Fritz Jacques said. “But we kept grinding.”

Lely’s half-court pressure forced several Naples turnovers in the third, as the Trojans closed to 62-56 heading into the final quarter of regulation.

“We made a nice little run and got more focused,” Jacques said.

In the fourth quarter, Lely scored only 10 points, but tied the game with defense. The Trojans forced nine turnovers in the fourth.

Naples scored four points in the fourth quarter as the game headed into overtime tied at 66.

Both teams looked for quality shots in the first four-minute overtime, with the scoring ending at 70-70.

With the score tied at 77, Naples had a chance to win in the second overtime with 1.21 seconds left.

“My best free throw shooter was at the line for 1-and-1, but missed the first free throw to leave the game tied,” Eaton said.

In the third overtime, the teams traded baskets. Gober was fouled in the act of shooting and stepped to the line with 2.4 seconds remaining.

He made the first to give Lely the lead, 83-82, but the second went in-and-out.

Naples got the rebound but missed its shot from outside the Lely foul circle.

“I considered calling a timeout, but I didn’t want to give Lely a chance to set their defense,” Eaton said.

Lely played its second straight overtime game, downing Mariner, 53-48, on Tuesday night.

“Lely and Naples is a great rivalry,” Jacques said. “I played in an overtime game when I was on the Lely team in 2004 and we had the same kind of game. We won in three overtimes.”

The teams meet again in a rematch next Friday at Lely.

“If you missed this game, you missed a classic battle between two rivals and quality basketball,” Eaton said. “Next week’s game will be out of this world.”
